On the way back to Tracy Island, (After putting out an Oil Well fire) Thunderbird 2 is attacked by the U.S. Navy Warship U.S.N. Sentinel for mistaking it as a bogie, having strayed into a Naval test area. The first missile stike is a near miss, but the second wave has changed frequency and hits the green freighter with a bang. Virgil attempts to break free of its dive, but an out-of-control Thunderbird 2 with black smoke tailing and sparks flying behind it is unable to respond and Virgil is knocked out as the console explodes. Later Scott snaps Virgil out of his state and at last Thunderbird 2 successfully regains flight control.
Crash landing[]
Thunderbird 2 has survived an accidental attack by missiles launched from the U.S.N. Sentinel but the giant aircraft is on fire and badly hit. The fire retardant units operated by Alan and Gordon are ready for Thunderbird 2. Virgil Tracy pilots the stricken Thunderbird to a crash-landing on Tracy Island. But as soon as the aircraft reaches the ground, the wheels fall off and Virgil is skidding toward the hangar. The fire retardants are activated and the blazing Thunderbird comes to a complete stop. Virgil is knocked out again and retrieved from the cockpit into his bedroom. He is not badly hurt but Thunderbird 2 will be out of action for weeks and is unable to transport Thunderbird 4 to New York.
